Liverpool played an important role in the American Civil War.
The Confederacy arranged for suitable ships to be built at Liverpool while attemting to avoid arousing the suspicions of Union spies.
The blockade runner LELIA was built by Millers shipyard and set off on her maiden voyage in early 1865. Chris Michael describes the details of her construction, her intended role, and the crew and passengers aboard, among them Confederate Navy Commander Arthur Sinclair and shipbuilder Thomas Miller.
